Lykins Update – February 16th, 2008

Dear Friends and family,

This has been a busy couple of weeks! Our boys and girls dorm have been under remodel. Specifically the bath rooms. They had last been updated…. maybe 40 years ago. So we stripped them down to the studs, and rewired so that the girls could use up to 5 hair dryers at a time, sheetrocked, installed a tile floor, new cabinets, sinks, fresh paint, and re-plumbed the toilets. Lots of work, and with our outreach teams from the fall DTS coming back this Wednesday, we had a deadline! We did get done on time, but worked 10 days straight and most evenings until 10. Reminded me of Nehemiah rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem. (52 days, no sabbath rest! Neh 6:15.)

Last month I requested prayer for traveling as Carol and I flew to Colorado to visit our daughter Rachael and our three grandchildren. (Oh yes, Pat, Rachael’s husband received a visit as well!) But mostly it was the grands!
Pat picked us up in Denver with a loaded trailer full of supplies for the rental center that he manages. He drove expertly over the great divide through a snow storm to Newcastle where they live. On the way back to Denver the roads were clear and the sky was blue. We decided to leave by 1:00 which would give us 4 1/2 hours to complete the 3 hour drive. Well, on Sunday afternoons during ski season the roads are FULL of skiers heading home from the slopes. We missed our 5:20 flight. The counter persons first suggestion was to wait until the next day and try again. (At a cost of $500 plus motel!) I told her that I really wanted to get home tonight! Was there ANYTHING that she could do, and “What would you do if you were in my place?” I think the last line got her. The next thing we knew, she was typing away, then printing out tickets for a 7 o’clock flight to Seattle/Portland. Thank you Jesus! We got into Portland around midnight. Alan, our son, met us and took us to our truck which he had parked at the Shilo Inn where he works. We didn’t have time to visit with him and Jaime because of the lateness of the hour, but it was good to hug his neck. As we drove through Portland it was snowing. Then half way to Salem, the roads became very icy and slick! I pulled over to see if I had low air pressure in my tires, (because the truck was a little squirreley) and nearly slipped and fell on the icy pavement. We drove in 4 wheel drive the rest of the way at 50 mph. We only saw one car off the road. Well, almost off the road. She was sideways nearly blocking our off ramp!
Anyway, thank you for your “safe travel” prayers! God answered!

Carol is wrapping up her preparations for the returning outreach teams. We will have 120 or so for dinners this week. The dorms will be full, and the excitement of young people testifying of God’s faithfulness in remote villages in Thailand, India, Cambodia, Sudan, Uganda and Alaska will be in the air. Next month, Carol is teaching in an ESL (English as a second language) school. She was working beside me this past week into the evening, so I would request extra prayers for her. She likes to keep her plate full. She will also be keeping up the hospitality department during her ESL school.

I am back to my maintenance schedule. We still have some final touches on the boys dorm extension. Also, our Crossroads DTS is gearing up. We have three couples signed up, and a few more in the works. Please pray that all that the Lord would call would come. Are you at a crossroads in your life? Has God been tugging at your heart for more involvement in fulfilling the Great Commission? Our school starts in June. I’d love to process your application!

This week I need to take the truck in for tires and alignment. Last June I helped a friend with the clutch on the truck. As a result, we didn’t get the tires aligned properly, and they wore out quickly. Anyway, if you would like to help with the cost of new tires we would be most grateful! As you may or may not know, we are supported by gifts from our friends and by the mission board of Living Faith Fellowship in Klamath Falls. This “team” of supporters has seen us through these past four years and we are so thankful for their faithful giving. Living stateside has proven more costly than “overseas.” However, we believe that we are right where we are supposed to be, serving with YWAM Salem. If God is tugging at your heart to join our financial team please say “Yes.”

We are so blessed to be walking this walk of faith. God is so faithful to provide all our needs according to His riches in Christ. Thank you for your prayers of support. Remember us while you brush your teeth!

Love,
Fred and Carol
